Abstract"Design and Building Process MBS" is a brief manual for prospective architects and engineers covering the competencies and the responsibilities of all involved parties through the design and building process. Lectures on twelve compact aspects gaining importance in a increasingly specialised, complex and international surrounding.
ObjectiveParticipants will come to understand how they can best navigate the design and building process, especially in relation to understanding their profession, gaining a thorough knowledge of rules and regulations, as well as understanding how involved parties' minds work. They will also have the opportunity to investigate ways in which they can relate to, understand, and best respond to their clients' wants and needs. Finally, course participants will come to appreciate the various tools and instruments, which are available to them when implementing their projects. The course will guide the participants, bringing the individual pieces of knowledge into a superordinate relationship.
Content"Design and Building Process MBS" is a brief manual for prospective architects and engineers covering the competencies and the responsibilities of involved parties through the design and building process. Twelve compact aspects regarding the establishe building culture are gaining importance in an increasingly specialised, complex and international surrounding. Lectures on the topics of profession, service model, organisation, project, design quality, coordination, costing, tendering and construction management, contracts and agreements, life cycle, real estate market, and getting started will guide the participants, bringing the individual pieces of knowledge into a superordinate relationship. The course introduces the key figures, depicts the criteria of the project and highlights the proveded services of the consultants. In addition to discussing the basics, the terminologies and the tendencies, the lecture units will refer to the studios as well as the prctice: Teaching-based case studies will compliment and deepen the understanding of the twelve selected aspects. The course is presented as a moderated seminar to allow students the opportunity for invididual input: active cololaboration between the students and their tutor therefore required.

AbstractIn our third semester, we reconsider and re-evaluate our identity as a leading consultant. For this we see how the concept of leadership works on and shapes our skills. In line with our acquired knowledge we now pay attention to all involved interests: the perception of demand. Furthermore, it is a necessity to understand the tasks and duties of every role which you can take on.
ObjectiveThe students are abe to understand the following terminologies, processes and competences. The are able to put them into practice.
- Interests and positions, perception of demands
- Concept of leadership
- Construction industry and real estate market

AbstractIn the first term of MAS ETH ARC, the students knowledge of the construction sector and the real estate market will be reinforced and deepened, along for an informed interpretation of the stakeholders' decision making processes. It explores the topics of involved parties and perception of demand. Additionally, it will guide students in developing their research proposals and research questions.
ObjectiveThe first term of MAS ETH ARC supports the students' expertise and personal skills and develops their reasoning and creative thinking skills. It compels the students to understand both ambitious projects and complex properties, to pursue long-term intentions, to carry out specific tasks, and to become aware of the consequences of their decisions. Over the course unit, students review and closely examine the expertise which they have gained so far. The course directs students to draw independent conclusions and to set forecasts as professionals. Ultimately, the knowledge and expertise which is gained throughout the unit will allow the students to fully realise their role as a professional in their field.

072-0101-00LModule 1: Foundations of Digitalisation Information Restricted registration - show details
Only for CAS ARC in Digital and MAS in Architecture, Real Estate, Construction.
1 credit2GA. Paulus, S. Menz
AbstractKey terms: Atoms and bits, transparency and manipulation
ObjectiveIndependently of the building industry, Module 1 initially provides information about the characteristics of digitalisation through its principles and rules, enabling the participants to independently recognise the short-term and long-term changes that are resulting from it.
ContentThe principles involved in digitalised business and society are illustrated using experience from fields that have already been changed, such as the hotel industry and the music industry. The switch from materially based collaboration to data-supported networking conflicts with established methods, tools and structures. Weaknesses in the relevant legislation may even become apparent — such as the uncertainties involved in liability issues for self-driving robots. Parallels with the building industry are developed on this basis in order to identify effects involving transparency, the acceleration of business processes and questions of property and liability.

072-0102-00LModule 2: Automation Information Restricted registration - show details
Only for CAS ARC in Digital and MAS in Architecture, Real Estate, Construction.
1 credit2GA. Paulus, S. Menz
AbstractKey terms: Substitution or disruption, organisation and “lean management”
ObjectiveModule 2 presents the origins and breadth of applications involved in automation and the conditions it requires, enabling participants to recognise the potential of these areas in a value-creation chain in which software and machines take over specific working steps.
ContentEver since the first industrial age, the automation of repetitive processes has been continuously transforming the processes and competences involved in the manufacturing industries. In relation to the building industry, it represents both an opportunity and a risk, since software is increasingly responding to individualised aspects of the planning, construction and usage of buildings.

An introduction to the scripting language Python is intended to familiarize participants with thinking in terms of data.

072-0103-00LModule 3: Networking Information Restricted registration - show details
Only for CAS ARC in Digital and MAS in Architecture, Real Estate, Construction.
1 credit2GA. Paulus, S. Menz
AbstractKey terms: Networked data, semantics and file formats
ObjectiveModule 3 provides the data-technical basis for digitally networked collaboration, enabling the participants to understand and evaluate the principles of data architecture, as well as details of file formats, attributes, servers and cloud-based systems.
ContentThe way in which data are structured in a digitalised sector of industry has tremendous effects on the people involved and on the ways in which they work. Well-structured data are more easily interpreted by software, leading to shorter information exchange cycles and information analysis, and consequently affecting project processing. Poorly structured data and interfaces, on the other hand, lead in the long term to data losses and a need for costly reorganization work.

The module explains and positions currently familiar open data formats such as IFC, BCF and COBie.

Only for CAS ARC in Digital and MAS in Architecture, Real Estate, Construction.
1 credit2GA. Paulus, S. Menz
AbstractKey terms: BIM and VDCO, fields of application and software
ObjectiveUsing specific examples, Module 4 illustrates the foundations and versatility of building information modeling (BIM), enabling participants to deal with the concepts, applications and mechanisms involved.
ContentBIM has become a key term in the digitalisation of the building industry. The program demonstrates the requirements and opportunities in this method of working, which is based on networked data and structured processes. The state of practical work here is presented through specific applications that extend beyond the areas of collision testing and room booking administration. The module ends by describing the current status of standardization in Switzerland and provides examples from abroad as well.

Finally, methods of writing an academically argued thesis, required for the program certificate, are presented.

072-0105-00LModule 5: Value Creation Information Restricted registration - show details
Only for CAS ARC in Digital and MAS in Architecture, Real Estate, Construction.
1 credit2GA. Paulus, S. Menz
AbstractKey terms: Business models, performance and “business intelligence”
ObjectiveUsing examples, Module 5 identifies value-creating activities in the lifecycle of a building, enabling participants to recognise and name the effects of digitalisation. In addition, the participants present their own theses in Module 5.
ContentDigitalisation is calling the foundations of value creation into question. The current status quo is being compared with the potential offered by digitalisation, and the first winners and losers are being identified. One challenging phenomenon is robot-aided manufacturing, for example. New business fields are also opening up as a result of “business intelligence,” which supports project managers in their decision-making processes.

At the end of the semester, the participants will present the state of their own theses on digitalisation and open them up for discussion.
