KurzbeschreibungThe course offers an introduction to structural design by the analysis and discussion of the interplay between forces, material and architectural form. The main characteristics of the most important building materials and their influence on the design of load bearing structures will be demonstrated by the analysis of selected contemporary and historical buildings.
LernzielThe objective of the course is to provide students with a fundamental understanding of the relationship between the form of a structure, the loads it needs to carry and the forces in it. The course consists of lectures and group work in the second part of the semester.
InhaltThe course focuses on the design of structures through the analysis of the interplay between the forces, material and architectural form of exemplary contemporary and historical buildings. By tracing the development lines of load bearing structures made of masonry, timber, steel and reinforced concrete, the fundamental characteristics of the main building materials will be discussed. In the second part of the semester, the students will deepen their understanding of the interdependencies between structural behaviour and architectural form by analysing selected buildings. The results of this analysis will be presented and discussed within the group.
