KurzbeschreibungThe course consists of weekly lectures by members of the ETH or by invited guests that will address special topics in architecture, urbanism, and contemporary research issues.
LernzielThe seminar will engage discussions of research methodology, i.e. the how, but also will attempt to foreground the why. For example, why do we, as architects, endeavor to “do” “research” on the city? What does it produce and how does it inform the practices of architecture and urban design? What are the political dimensions of urban research and to what extent can such practices reach beyond our own disciplines to address larger issues? What are the different modes of conducting this kind of urban research? How do the decisions about how to approach a topic change the ways that it is understood and produced? In other words, what are the techniques of research and what are their implications?

Participants should leave the course with an understanding of current urban research issues and with the tools to conduct that research themselves.
SkriptTexts to accompany each presentation will be sent via email before each weekly session.
