Abstract Introduction to the basic concepts of orthopaedic science with special emphasis on bioengineering.
Objective Introduction to the basic concepts of orthopaedic science with special emphasis on bioengineering.
Content Orthopaedics nowadays is heavily influenced by the general movement in medicine towards cellular and molecular therapy approaches. In this context, engineering principles are very important in the development and application of quantitative approaches in biology and medicine.

This course includes a general introduction to structure and function of the musculoskeletal system: anatomy and physiology of cells, tissues, organs, and joints; hierarchical imaging methods to assess and quantify single cells or large joint systems; introduction in biomechanics of musculoskeletal tissues and joints.

In the second part of the course, bone and cartilage diseases and their therapies will be the focus: arthritis, osteoporosis; traumatology and fracture healing; joint replacement and reconstruction; implants; molecular and cellular approaches; computer simulations; genetics, genomics and gene therapy; biomaterials and tissue engineering.
Lecture notes Available online.
Notice Lectures will be given in English. Experience with Matlab will be expected.
