AbstractThis course provides a pedagogical introduction to Quantum Electrodynamics.
Learning objectiveStudents will be introduced to the theory of Quantum Electrodynamics, and the use of Feynman diagrams to arrive at theoretical predictions for phenomena related to the interaction of light and matter. The course is designed to complement Quantum Field Theory I for those students with a special interest in theoretical elementary particle physics.
ContentThe course will cover
- an introduction to QED as the quantum theory of interactions of light and matter.
- Feynman rules for QED
- Amplitudes and cross sections for simple processes in QED
- Gauge invariance and the Ward identity
- Ultraviolet singularities and Renormalization
- Infrared singularities and their cancelation
- The Ueling potential and the Lamb shift
- Anomalous magnetic moments
