AbstractFrom New Atlantis (1627) to the cyber-utopianism of recent decades, the hope that technology might deliver mankind from evil has been a driving force of scientific inquiry. In this course, we will discuss utopian texts, classics of sci-fi (e.g. Frankenstein) and more recent works to gain an understanding of how literature explores the ethical dilemmas posed by the quest for scientific knowledge.
Learning objectiveAt the end of the course, students can:
- outline some of the historical developments in Anglophone literary discourses about science (e.g. early modern vs. Romantic anxieties);
- explain why arguments concerning literary texts must take into account matters of content as well as style and literary form;
- debate the relevance (and the limits) of literary art for questions of ethics in science.
