| Abstract | From New Atlantis (1627) to the cyber-utopianism of recent decades, the hope that technology might deliver mankind from evil has been a driving force of scientific inquiry. In this course, we will discuss utopian texts, classics of sci-fi (e.g. Frankenstein) and more recent works to gain an understanding of how literature explores the ethical dilemmas posed by the quest for scientific knowledge. | ||||
| Learning objective | At the end of the course, students can: - outline some of the historical developments in Anglophone literary discourses about science (e.g. early modern vs. Romantic anxieties); - explain why arguments concerning literary texts must take into account matters of content as well as style and literary form; - debate the relevance (and the limits) of literary art for questions of ethics in science. | ||||
