AbstractIntroductory course to Mathematical aspects of Machine Learning, including Supervised Learning, Unsupervised Learning, Sparsity, and Online Learning.
Learning objectiveIntroduction to Mathematical aspects of Machine Learning.
ContentMathematical aspects of Supervised Learning, Unsupervised Learning, Sparsity, and Online Learning. This course is a Mathematical course, with Theorems and Proofs.
Prerequisites / NoticeNote for non Mathematics students: this class requires a certain degree of mathematical maturity--including abstract thinking and the ability to understand and write proofs.
401-3940-22LStudent Seminar in Mathematics and Data: Matrix Discrepancy Restricted registration - show details
Number of participants limited to 12.
4 credits2SA. Bandeira, A. Maillard
AbstractThis student seminar will focus on an Open Problem in Matrix Discrepancy, often referred to as Matrix Spencer.
Learning objective
ContentThe student seminar will focus on Open Problem 4.3. here https://people.math.ethz.ch/~abandeira/TenLecturesFortyTwoProblems.pdf
Each week a student will either present a related paper or thoughts on a particular case for the problem. When the Spring 2022 section of forum.math.ethz.ch opens up, more information will be posted there (keep an eye out for it).
Prerequisites / NoticeIf you would like to participate in the student seminar, sign up and send Antoine Maillard <antoine.maillard@math.ethz.ch> (i) your transcript (a strong background in probability and linear algebra is needed) (ii) An argument with an upper bound where the constant C can depend on n, any dependency is fine. You can also send other thoughts on the problem.

AbstractLectures on current topics in optimization.
Learning objectiveThis lecture series introduces graduate students to ongoing research activities (including applications) in the domain of optimization.
ContentThis seminar is a forum for researchers interested in optimization theory and its applications. Speakers, invited from both academic and non-academic institutions, are expected to stimulate discussions on theoretical and applied aspects of optimization and related subjects. The focus is on efficient (or practical) algorithms for continuous and discrete optimization problems, complexity analysis of algorithms and associated decision problems, approximation algorithms, mathematical modeling and solution procedures for real-world optimization problems in science, engineering, industries, public sectors etc.
